South Florida Fair organizes first home improvement show

From impact windows to home fitness equipment, the South Florida Fair’s Home Improvement & More Show is set to offer a one-stop shopping experience for residents looking to make at-home enhancements.

With over 60 vendors in attendance, the free event is set for Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds, 9067 Southern Blvd., in West Palm Beach. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Representing an array of home improvement areas, the vendors include kitchen, bath, water filtration, patios, doors, landscape, security, remolding, hot tubs, roofing, gazebos, household items, art, jewelry, window treatment, decks, patios, screening, tree services, flooring and automotive.

After experiencing a couple of bumps in the road due to COVID-19, South Florida Fair and Palm Beach County Expositions President and CEO Vicki Chouris and corporate sales manager Tim Pachis overcame obstacles to put together the event.

“We had on our books a home show that is done by someone professionally all the time at different locations,” Chouris said. “They decided they were having some challenges early on with getting enough vendors… So, they canceled on us. We said, ‘We could go ahead and try to do this ourselves’ and that’s exactly what we did.

“Tim [Pachis] just started reaching out to different businesses that have the offerings for home improvement shows and got a positive response,” Chouris said. “People were anxious to participate. The vendors wanting to get out there and showcase their products.”

Guests are required to wear a mask for entry and will be asked to social distance. Spaced out walkways and hand sanitation stations will also be available.

Managing to put the event together within eight weeks, some of the event sponsors include Bath

Swatty Creek Mill opened last month in a former pharmacy at 28 W. Main St.

The store sells a variety of items including seasonal home decor, soap, florals, potpourri, t-shirts, blankets, pillows, rugs, candles, snacks, gifts, apparel and some vintage items in the four-room facility.

Williams said that the new shop will allow her to have all of the of the store’s items centrally located and available for shipping nationally or the items can now be picked up in Hummelstown.

In the future, she hopes to host “do it Yourself” and “how to” classes at the store and she also hopes to have space for local vendors as well.

Previously, Williams was an assistant vice president with Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Last year she started Swatty Creek Mill by selling items through Etsy, Amazon and the company website. She also sold items from the store at a booth in the Palmyra area. And she has a booth at Olde Factory Antiques and Crafts in Hummelstown and she will continue to do so.

Swatty Creek Mill is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Antique decor adds mystery to your home

By Angella Nampewo

From way back in the day, I have been a lover of old things; finger rings, lampshades and lots of other knickknacks. The beauty of owning these ancient things is that they are one-of-a-kind items, which you are unlikely to find anywhere, so antiques score 100 per cent on the scale of uniqueness. The trouble with antiques is that they are not sold everywhere. You have to have a keen eye or a bunch of connected friends with similar tastes to get your hands on some of these pieces.

Not an ordinary love

They are not your ordinary household goods. Antiques are quaint and ancient. They are bits and bobs collected from the old world. These items are not sold in regular shops on your average street. For one thing, antiques are not easy to come by and to qualify as things of value, they must have a back story. In order to find these sought after but precious and rare items, one may need to put in some leg work and it is while walking through the back streets that you will likely find a corner shop full of the goodies. If you are not lucky to stumble on a dealer or antiques’ shop, then you have to rely on word of mouth recommendation from others with similar interests to point you in the right direction.

In the past, while walking around Kampala, I have stumbled on a flea market at Centenary Park where, fortunately, I managed to pick up a lamp holder with a woven lampshade. The lampshade has served me well and though I was unable to trace its story and previous owner, every time I look at it, there is the secret satisfaction of sharing in the original owner’s good taste.
