Meyer says he’s centrist, Cattanach says he’s out of touch in Texas House rematch for key Dallas seat

State Rep. Morgan Meyer says the district he represents is centrist.

Because of that, the Republican lawmaker said he’s focused his five years in Austin on middle-of-the-road issues where he can work across the aisle with Democrats.

“We are not far to the left, we are not far to the right,” he said. “We are right in the middle.”

But his Democratic opponent Joanna Cattanach says that old line won’t work. House District 108 — which spans the Park Cities, Uptown, parts of downtown and Old East Dallas — has moved politically to the left and Meyer is “out of touch” with its needs on issues like access to abortion and preventing gun violence.

After coming within 220 votes of ousting Meyer two years ago, Cattanach said she’s back to finish the job in November.

“The issues that I fought for in 2018, did not change,” she said. “The district has become, frankly, even more socially liberal on many of these issues and they do want change.”

The political rematch is one of the most closely watched races in the November elections, partially because the district is one of the Democrats’ top targets this year.

The outcome could also have deeper implications for the battle for the Texas House, as Democrats try to take the chamber for the first time since 2001. Such a victory could dramatically alter the political landscape in Texas.

What’s the right fit for the district?

Meyer, a 46-year-old attorney, said the district’s politics remain the same as when he was elected. If voters need proof, just look at the last election.

A poll conducted for the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) PAC and obtained exclusively by The Hill shows Biden getting the support of 53 percent of likely voters surveyed, compared with 42 percent for Trump. Another 5 percent are undecided, will vote for another candidate or refused to answer. Biden has a heftier 58 percent to 33 percent advantage among voters who have already cast ballots. 

In the House race, Eastman narrowly leads Bacon by a 47 percent-45 percent margin, while Libertarian candidate Tyler Schaeffer gets 6 percent. Eastman also grows her lead over Bacon among those who have already voted, holding a 59 percent-36 percent edge.

Kitchen safety, alarms key to fire prevention

Forty per cent of residential fires in Fort St. John over the past five years did not have working smoke alarms.

It’s an alarming statistic as firefighters mark Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4 to 10, put on by the Office of the Fire Commissioner and this year focused on kitchen safety.

Fire Prevention Officer Capt. Marco D’Agostino says the theme is highly relevant, with residents staying home due to the ongoing pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has kept many of us at home more often this year, so this year’s Fire Prevention Week of Serving Up Safety in the Kitchen is extremely relevant,” said D’Agostino, noting that smoke alarms are crucial for fire prevention.

The department is celebrating Fire Prevention Week a little differently this year, serving up safety tips by producing their own video on kitchen safety. D’Agostino says the department has pushed their campaign to the digital sphere.

“This year is a little different with COVID, we didn’t do a kickoff, and we’re not going to the schools to do our talks. We still have publications and printed materials going out, but we did produce our own video,” he said. “It’s a way to get the message out there.”
