Boston Police arrest man accused of attempted rape in Public Garden

A man accused of trying to rape a woman in the Public Garden early Monday morning has been arrested, Boston Police announced on Tuesday.

Luan Maxwell, 30, of Boston, has been arrested and charged with assault with intent to rape.

Boston Police had reached out to the public for help in identifying a suspect who allegedly tried to rape a woman in the Public Garden at around 6 a.m. Monday.

Officers from the department’s Sexual Assault Unit responded at that time to a call for an assault with intent to rape.

The victim told detectives that she was walking in the park when a man approached her and placed his hand over her mouth. The man made sexually explicit threats and tried to remove a piece of the woman’s clothing, she told police.

She was able to free herself from the man and get to safety.

Then on Tuesday at around 9:45 a.m., officers and detectives assigned to the Sexual Assault Unit arrested the suspect, Maxwell.

While on patrol, officers received information regarding his location and saw him walking on Boylston Street toward Washington Street. Upon seeing officers, Maxwell tried to flee but was apprehended by the captain of District A-1 on Harrison Avenue.

Maxwell is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.

Man arrested for allegedly attempting to rape woman in Public Garden; caught after foot pursuit

A man was arrested by Boston police during a foot pursuit Tuesday on a charge of attempting to rape a woman as she walked through the Public Garden in downtown Boston early Monday.

Luan Maxwell, 30, of Boston, is scheduled to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on a charge of assault with intent to rape, police wrote in a posting on bpdnews.com.

The woman told Sexual Assault Unit detectives that around 6 a.m. Monday she was walking inside the Public Garden when she was accosted by a man who placed his hand over her mouth.

The suspect made “sexually explicit threats and attempted to remove an article of clothing on the victim,” police wrote. “The victim was able to free herself from the suspect’s grasp and flee to safety.”

Maxwell was identified by police as the alleged attacker and was spotted Tuesday walking on Boylston Street in the downtown area where he ran off as officers moved into arrest him, police wrote.

Maxwell was taken into custody after the foot pursuit on Kneeland Street by the commander of Area A-1/15, Captain Robert Ciccolo.

Officers assigned to the sex assault unit responded around 6 a.m. to the park for a report of “an assault with attempt to rape,” the department said in a statement.

A woman told police that the man put his hand over her mouth, “while making sexually explicit threats and attempting to remove an article of clothing,” according to the statement.

The woman was able to free herself and run to safety, police said.

The suspect is described as a Black male, in his 20s or 30s, who has a slim to medium bill and short dreadlocks, the statement said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police detectives at 617-343-4400.
